Service and food were great. Interesting decor with no shortage of things to look at. If you're on a diet, this is not the place for you. We started with the crab balls and corn fritters. Delicious. So good my daughter decided to order the crab cake, which was full of lumps of meat and not too much filing. My husband had the chili (traditional country cooking flavor) and the ham and cheese sandwich he said tasted like heaven. My daughter and I shared the cream of crab soup that was full of meat and very creamy. I had the hillbilly chicken, which was half a chicken fried perfectly with not too much breading and to much to eat in one sitting. Delicious country cooking.

Go here for breakfast! This is one of the best breakfast places around. The gravy and biscuits are awesome and the sausage patties are amazing. We always try to stop on our motorcycle to have breakfast at this great location. Enjoy folks.

The 'Stuffy Aunt's House' decor aside this place is kind of awful. The staff is friendly enough, but the food is terrible. It's nothing but Cisco canned veggies and frozen meats. Anyone who thinks this food is good hasn't ever had actual good food. This is cafeteria quality AT BEST. We went once, laughed in horror at the overdone and claustrophobic decor, ate as much as we could manage to choke down and got out of there. We won't be back and I have warned a few people visiting from out of town away from there too. I mean, if you're a fan of bland, cafeteria food, save yourself a few bucks and an aneurysm and go eat at the hospital cafeteria. Same food, less visual assault and cost.

Just stood waiting to be seated for a ridiculously long time while the cashier continued ringing up a line of about ten people, never once acknowledging our presence. Two servers saw us, kept walking and one sat in front of us rolling silverware the entire time. We finally gave up. Not sure how the food is but we'll never find out.

We were seated promptly and served very fresh bread. Our order was taken in a timely manner. The decor overall has a heavy Christian theme, that doesn't bother me, because I'm catholic, lol. Which also means I like my wine and this establishment is alcohol free. I can live without having a drink with dinner but when paying $35 for a steak, I think it just comes with the territory to have a liquor license. Actually, if this place had a liquor license, they might have a line out the door, so maybe it's a good thing. The menu has a lot of items that are $20+ for dinner entrees. My husband, 7 year old, and I, all ordered filet cooked mid rare and cream of crab soup to start. Creatures of habit. The soups flavor was amazing. It just wasn't hot. It was barely warm. But it tasted so good, it almost didn't matter. Dinner arrived in a timely manner, I don't feel like it took long at all. My 10oz filet was clearly larger than 10oz and had a great flavor. Overall...downhome cooking for the sides but the steaks stand out and rival expensive steak houses in the city.

This is a very good locally owned and run establishment. Fare is traditional American. . . think Cracker Barrel with more selection. Crab cakes were good without too much breading. Steaks were cooked just right. Friendly wait staff. Service was a little slow, but we were there on a Friday night. Much of the decor is Christian themed. If that bothers you then you need to practice tolerance and respect for other peoples' beliefs. Overall this is a nice restaurant and well worth a try.

Johns has really dropped in quality. The service is aweful, and the food is not worth it.

I still haven't gotten back from the last time over four years ago. I talked to people since then and they say the service is still bad.

We visited John's on Tuesday afternoon for lunch. We both ordered the Hot Roast Beef with Fries. After waiting to have our order taken, after waiting for our server to get off his cell phone we were finally served our meals. We both took one bite of the sandwich and could not eat anymore. The meat was not Roast Beef- it was pressed, process beef with a texture of a sponge. The gravy was a color between brown and gray with a strange plastic taste. The fries were old and reheated in the deep fryer. So soaked in oil, they were transparent. We picked over the edible fries only because we were starving. The funniest thing was when our server asked if we wanted a box! We told the cashier how awful the food was, but was never offered a refund. Now on to the dirty, dusty, decor. I think the grud is the only thing holding the building up. I would love to see this restaurant on Restaurant Impossible!! I have never written a bad review. I was also concerned of the effects a adverse review would have on a business, but in this case, maybe they will hire a chef and a housekeeper.

Went to John's at 7:30 on a Friday night, service was a bit slow but very friendly. The decor is kind of overwhelming but if you don't mind flea market flair, it'll be ok. It's a country restaurant, so the decor reflects the owners. The food was cooked to perfection. My steak was one of the best I'd tasted and was prepared exactly how I asked for it. The sides were pretty much what you'd expect from a family restaurant, bulk prepared, small servings and single flavored (albeit a good flavor for what we tried). To sum it all up, my wife and I like talking to each other so the wait was not bad for us. We will be going back when we have a taste for steaks again. BUT I wouldn't take a big group unless you have a lot to talk about.

I feel bad for writing a sucky review for what seemed to be a great establishment for years. This review is based on an event that happened during a special occassion which resulted in extremely slow service and most importantly what was overheard being said by the restaurant's manager that evening about our party. Here's a tip. Never speak about customers in your establishment because well there's always a chance that someone may hear it and we did. This is beyond tacky and just poor judgement, especially at your age. Even our young waiters acted more professional than you did the entire night. Moral of the story, if you don't have something nice to say.... say it in private! Not in an open dining hall even if you're no where near the people you're talking about.

We like to go to John's for breakfast when we're visiting family in the area. The decor is cute country and they go all out for decorating for Christmas. There are a variety of reasonably priced breakfast options but I usually go for the early bird - two eggs, bacon, sausage (delicious!), home fries and toast - but they always let me sub a single pancake for the toast. I love getting a little bit of everything. The French toast is great too and from what I hear, the sausage gravy & biscuits are tasty as well.

Had breakfast there this morning enroute to a Studio Tour in WV. Decent number of cars out front, but not packed. We were waited on right away and both husband and I ordered breakfast. After almost a half hour we asked the waiter to check on our food. He returned immediately with out plates and said the cook was just then plating them. My breakfast sandwich was very good with spicy sausage and it was almost too hot to eat. My husband had ordered eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, etc. His dish was barely warm. When the waiter came to ask how our food was, I told him and he said "sorry about that" and walked off. We did not ask to have the plate re-made because we had already wasted too much time there. At check out, the another waiter/cashier asked how the food was. I didn't mention the long wait, but told him about the "just warm" food and he said "sorry about that". Well, "sorry about that", but we won't eat there again.

Came here this past weekend for dinner and ordered the fried jumbo shrimp... which were actually deep fried butterfly shrimp (probably came frozen at that rather than freshly made), I was a bit disappointed. I had a side of mashed sweet potatoes which were a bit on the bland side (all that sugar in there sweet tea should have went into this, heh), and also a side of corn (looked like canned rather than fresh and idk bout the green onions in it). Also came with 2 container cups of cocktail sauce (made me feel like my meal was a to-go order rather than a sit-down). The best part of my dinner was probably the hot small loaf of bread we got while waiting for our dinner to arrive (beware the steak knife jammed in its side, haha)... although served with small packets of butter (behold the tackiness, heh).

Have been to John's a few times. Very good for breakfast but service very slow. Went today for lunch, wanted a cheeseburger and fries. The cheeseburger was awful....it was a frozen patty. The fries were great......the tea was way to sweet. Was never offered refill on tea. Hubby had the chili, said it was okay, could have had better at home. I don't mind the Christian overtones, and I like the decor, but since moving here 8 years ago the food has gone down hill. One thing they make great is a crab soup.....delish...expensive but worth every penny. It is always packed on fri and sat nite....why I do not know.....I do not think we will go back....slow service, below par food...not worth the money......

Situated away from the main town, John's Family Restaurant has been a staple in this area for many years. Despite the fact that so many people on here seem more intent on making snide comments about the Christian decor or the people who patronize the restaurant, anyone with common sense will hopefully look past that nonsensical negativity and give the place a try. John's Family restaurant is Christian themed, and quite heavily so. However, the staff isn't quoting bible verses, taking up collections for a church drive, or trying to convert you. I see no reason to find the Christian decor of John's offputting, unless you find the abundance of Buddha statues at pretty much any Asian food establishment offputting. I've never found a Buddha statue or a crucifix to enhance or detract from my enjoyment of food, and this is coming from a die-hard atheist who thinks churches should be taxed. It i was to try an classify the decor, it's basically like a Cracker Barrel type of decor, with Christian elements added into it. Now on to what really matters: the food! The food has generous portions, great prices, and I have rarely ever had any problems with the food there after having eaten there many times over many years. The only problems I have had there have been minor: a steak a little over cooked, confusion on a substitution on an order, etc. However, the staff is very friendly and has always been willing to fix those errors when they were brought to their attention. This is a "meat and potatoes", country home cooking kind of establishment. It does not have a menu that would thrill a vegetarian, but that's not really the clientele they're looking to draw. One of the things that I love about this place is that the sides are just as good as the main courses. In too many restaurants (particularly one's of this type), they emphasize the main course, but the sides are canned, frozen, or other unappetizing fare. At John's, when you order a meal with a side of macaroni and cheese and greens, you won't know where to start first because it is all so good. If you're in the area, definitely give this place a try. You'll have a far more memorable, enjoyable meal than you would at any of the tons of chain restaurants that infest this area.

Eating at John's was a singular experience. It's a restaurant that loudly proclaims it's a family-run Christian restaurant. The entire place is an interesting hodge podge of homey devotional decor, Tiffany lamps, salvaged antiques. One booth is actually a converted Amish buggy. My kids got a kick out of eating in the buggy. The menu is steak, seafood and homestyle. I was confused by the seafood offerings since John's is in the middle of West Virginia, but whatever. My stepfather had the surf & turf, which he enjoyed... but my inner food critic was questioning his judgement. I opted for the homes style vittles, which I expected were a better bet. The menu was very heavy on meat, which I have an aversion too, so I chose the tapas approach to dinner and got a bunch of apps. The apple and corn fritters were bangin! I forget what else I got because, well, it was forgetable. The kids hardly touched their food and I ended up having to fill their gullets with travel-snacks for the long ride home back to Jerz. Overall, the food was mediocre, a little over priced, and not particularly special. The cleanliness, friendly service and unusual decor tip the scales in John's favor, but ultimately because the restaurant is a bit out of the way, it not quite worth the effort. It's the kind of place that if you happened to be in the area, you might consider grabbing a bite with the kids... but otherwise, you'd give it a pass.

Made a wrong turn trying to get from Harper's Ferry to our hotel in Lovettsville, and ended up passing by this restaurant and decided to stp in. First impression: it looks like a flea market exploded in the restaurant. Seriously, it looked like a hoarder grandmother's house. Upon closer inspection, you notice that it's also Christian themed, with some of their kitsch including various signs about god, and even examples of pre-meal grace in several different denominations on the placemats. Honestly, a bit off-putting to this agnostic jew, but by this point we were seated and hungry. Because this is a Christian restaurant in rural West Virginia, no alcohol was available, which was a bit annoying to this alcoholic who really could have used a beer after a long day of white water rafting. I'll refrain from discussing whether giving unlimited refills of sweet tea to their obese patrons is a bigger sin than offering beer or wine though... In spite of the terrible ambiance (and lack of wine to enjoy with my dinner), the food was surprisingly good, and not to mention cheap. I got a New York strip steak topped with "crab butter", which was simply lump crab in butter sauce. Delicious. I figured this was the sort of place where I should order my steak rare, and sure enough as expected the steak came out the medium rare I actually wanted. All entrees came with two sides, and I opted for collard greens and a baked sweet potato. I didn't realize that the sweet potato would be drenched in butter and brown sugar, to the point where you couldn't taste the potato, but the collard greens were quite good. Husband got a ribeye, which was also quite good. They were packed, and service was slooooow, albeit friendly. I see no reason to ever go out of my way to head back there, but if you happen to find yourself lost on route 349 in WV, at least there's a place where you can get a decent steak.

Decent food, but s-l-o-w service that seemed to be due mostly to the staff chatting in the back.

We came here a few years ago for the first time. We were there for breakfast and it was wonderful. We went back a few other times and it was OK but not quite as good. We took some friends there the other night and I was very disappointed. We ordered crab balls for the appetizer for the 4 of us, and I was surprised when they brought out a tiny dish with 4 tiny crab balls on it. We joked about savoring each tiny nibble of the one crab ball we each got to have. When the dinner arrived, it looked good and there was plenty of food, but my friends ham had a lot of fat on it and everyone seemed to be picking through their food. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant flakes from a box and no one finished their food or wanted to take it home with them. Its too bad, because the atmosphere is very pretty and the staff is very nice. The restaurant is decorated in a Victorian, vintage decor and they have a lot of antiques everywhere. I really wish our experience was like the first time we went. I don't think we will be going back there for awhile. Maybe they will change chefs in the meantime.

I like it! Some don't seem to like the decorating, I usually go to a restaurant for the food. Stick to the basics, you will be happy & full. I know this sounds crazy for a West Virginia restaurant, but try the crab soup, it is darn good.

One of my parents favorite places. They made reservations on a Sat. evening for a very special occasion with family from out of town. We received our drinks very quickly but food order took almost an hour then another hour before we started to receive food and then it was brought out in no particular order. I ordered country ham with two sides, received the ham, then one side and when I was already done and leftovers packed the second side came out...REALLY! We asked multiple times...some food and sides were cold, others were just wrong. My sister is a vegetarian and asked about one of the sides before ordering to make sure there was NO meat in it, she was told no....my brother got the same side....his had a bone in it for flavoring, I;m sure they didn't make her's special! Needless to say my Parents were very upset and my sister in law spoke with the owner and they did come to the table and offer an apology and even gave them a gift card and said they could use it towards the bill. My father, a very proud man was very disappointed in how this special night turned out so wrong. I can't speak for the others but my husband and I will not be back!

The fried chicken is awesome! Cream of crab soup is good too but a little expensive. Very cute place and nice atmosphere. Very friendly staff. Can tell the mashed potatoes are boxed and not fresh though. Appetizer crab balls are delicious- mini crab cakes! If you like cracker barrel, then you will love this place for the home style cooking'.

this place is very family friendly and christian-friendly. i think that's the biggest selling point for most people. we like to sit in the amish buggy when we go. the decorations are charming though the place is small. lots of country kitch ambience in there. the food is ultimately forgettable. i'm a vegetarian and never know what to eat. sometimes i'll get a salad and other times just order sides. but everything is sort of bland. if country cooking is your thing (heaven knows there are so many "home cooking" restaurants, not sure why since you can do the same thing at HOME), then this would be a good place for you. if you're not white, christian and country you might be a little bit turned off by the place.

  • J W.

Dreadful. A must to avoid. We ordered the most expensive steak on the menu but it was inedible. Full of fat and tough and poorly cooked. We asked for our money back and were given receipts for a meal of the same value....which would mean that we would have to return here to eat it, which ain't gonna happen in this life. Overall, the food was plain and uninspired. The service is friendly, but very, very slow. The bathrooms were clean but the rooms are very dark. The place is also seeped in a heavy-duty Christian religious theme....everywhere; in the parking lot, the menus, the placemats, etc. I'm a Christian but there is a time and a place, the bible tells us, for all things and a steak house in West Virginia ain't the time or the place. Frankly, it's a place that the lower levels of society would find fancy and that's pretty much the clientele.

I stopped by for lunch in September of 2011.I really enjoyed the country atmosphere, the display of Christian belief,as well as the food. The service was great as well. When I'm in that area again I will support John's.

John's is a little off the beaten path, but it's worth stopping in for a country breakfast or a decent dinner (except on Sundays, when John's is shuttered tightly all day). The food is good -- not amazing, but good. The service is friendly, but very, very slow. Expect to be sitting close to an hour and a half or even two hours for a full John's meal experience. The breakfast potatoes are plain, if not even boring, but the country sausage is genuine. Many of the food products seem to be taken right out of Sysco's catalog, but ask your server what's good on any given day and you'll usually be steered in the right direction. Breakfast prices are reasonable, but the prices increase sharply as the menu moves toward dinner. Just as a note to those that might care, the restaurant carries a heavily Christian religious theme from the menus, to the wall decor, right through to the placemats.
